How do I know if my propane tank is empty?

Quick answer

Signs of a low or empty propane tank include weak yellow flames, grill failing to light, longer preheat times, and a gauge reading near empty. Without a gauge, pour warm water down the tank side — the liquid propane level feels cool to the touch below the fill line.

Warm water level check

  1. Run warm (not boiling) water down the outside of the tank.
  2. Wait a few seconds and feel the steel from top to bottom.
  3. The cool section marks the approximate propane level.
  4. If cool zone is very low or absent, plan a refill before your next cook.

Grill symptoms of low fuel

  • Burners won't ignite or stay lit
  • Flames are low even on high
  • Regulator freeze-up during heavy draw (can also indicate other issues)
