Help Center Propane Tank Questions
How do I know if my propane tank is empty?
Quick answer
Signs of a low or empty propane tank include weak yellow flames, grill failing to light, longer preheat times, and a gauge reading near empty. Without a gauge, pour warm water down the tank side — the liquid propane level feels cool to the touch below the fill line.
Warm water level check
- Run warm (not boiling) water down the outside of the tank.
- Wait a few seconds and feel the steel from top to bottom.
- The cool section marks the approximate propane level.
- If cool zone is very low or absent, plan a refill before your next cook.
Grill symptoms of low fuel
- Burners won't ignite or stay lit
- Flames are low even on high
- Regulator freeze-up during heavy draw (can also indicate other issues)
