How far should a grill be from the house?

Quick answer

Place propane grills at least 10 feet from siding, deck rails, and overhangs when possible, and never grill in an enclosed garage or under a low awning. Follow your grill manual clearance specs — they override general rules — and keep the tank hose away from hot surfaces.

Clearance checklist

  • 10+ feet from structures is a common guideline
  • Keep away from dry brush, vinyl siding, and fabric awnings
  • Ensure grease drips cannot hit combustible decking untreated
  • Open lid before lighting; preheat with lid up as manual directs

Deck and patio notes

Use a grill mat on composite decking and verify HOA or local fire codes. Built-in outdoor kitchens need manufacturer-specified insulation and framing clearances.
