What should I do if I smell gas?

Quick answer

If you smell gas, do not light the grill or flip switches nearby. Turn off the tank valve if you can reach it safely, move everyone away, and call 911 from a safe location if the smell is strong or persistent. Then apply soapy water to connections to find minor leaks or call a professional.

Immediate steps

  1. Extinguish any open flames and do not operate electrical switches nearby.
  2. Close the propane cylinder valve if safe to reach.
  3. Move people and pets upwind and away from the area.
  4. Call 911 if odor is strong, you hear hissing, or symptoms occur.
  5. Once safe, check fittings with soapy water — bubbles mean leak.

After a minor leak is found

Replace cracked hoses, damaged O-rings, or faulty regulators before using the grill again. Our showroom staff can help identify compatible parts.
