Help Center Propane Tank Questions
Propane refill vs exchange — which is better?
Quick answer
Refilling your own tank usually costs less per pound and fills the tank closer to capacity; exchange programs trade speed and convenience for higher per-pound cost and sometimes older swap tanks. If you own a good tank in date, refilling at a qualified dealer is typically the better value.
Refill pros
- Lower cost per pound in most markets
- You keep your tank — helpful if it is new or has a gauge
- Often more propane delivered (typically up to 20 lbs on a 20 lb cylinder)
Exchange pros
- Fast swap at many retail locations
- No wait while filling
- Handy when your tank is out of date or damaged
