Help Center Propane Tank Questions
Do propane tanks expire?
Quick answer
Yes — portable propane cylinders have a manufacture date and must be recertified or replaced after 12 years in the U.S., then typically every 5 years after recertification. The date is stamped on the collar. Out-of-date tanks cannot legally be refilled at reputable dealers.
Find the date stamp
Look at the tank collar for MM/YY or an month-year code. If your tank is past date, swap for a new or recertified cylinder rather than attempting an illegal fill.
Recertification vs new tank
Recertification can extend useful life at lower cost than buying new — ask your refill location what they accept. Damaged or rusty tanks should be retired regardless of date.
