How do I reset a propane regulator?

Quick answer

To reset a propane regulator, turn all grill knobs off, shut the tank valve, disconnect the hose from the tank, wait 60 seconds, reconnect slowly while the tank valve is still off, then open the tank valve gradually and light one burner. This clears many excess-flow lockouts.

Regulator reset procedure

  1. Close all burner control knobs on the grill.
  2. Close the tank valve completely.
  3. Unscrew the regulator hose from the tank.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the hose hand-tight (no wrench on plastic collar).
  6. Open tank valve slowly — about one full turn to start.
  7. Wait 10 seconds, then light one burner on high with lid open.

If reset fails

Inspect for cracked hoses, oily wet connections (leak sign), or a regulator older than 10 years. Replace the regulator assembly if problems persist on a known-full tank.
