Can propane tanks be left in the sun?

Quick answer

Propane tanks can be outdoors in sunlight — they are designed for it — but shade reduces pressure buildup and extends paint and valve life. Never store tanks in enclosed hot spaces like cars or unventilated sheds. Upright position and relief-valve clearance remain essential.

Why shade helps

Direct sun increases internal pressure. Relief valves handle normal swings, but moderate temperatures keep regulators and hoses happier long term.

Grill placement

Position the tank so the relief valve is at the top (upright) and the hose is not kinked or stressed by heat from the firebox.
