How should I store a propane tank?

Quick answer

Store propane tanks upright outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from living spaces and ignition sources. Never store tanks in a garage, basement, or enclosed shed long term. Keep the valve closed when not connected, and use a stable base so the tank cannot tip.

Proper storage checklist

  1. Store upright on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Keep outdoors or in a ventilated cage — not inside the home.
  3. Stay at least 10 feet from windows or doors when possible.
  4. Close the valve fully when disconnected.
  5. Protect from standing water and road salt; a cover helps.

Winter and summer notes

In winter, tanks remain safe outdoors — cold reduces pressure slightly but does not make storage unsafe. In summer, shade reduces pressure buildup; never leave tanks in a hot enclosed vehicle long term.
