Can I transport propane in my car?

Quick answer

You can transport a sealed propane tank in a vehicle for a short trip if the cylinder is upright, secured against tipping, valve closed, and the area ventilated — preferably in the trunk with windows cracked or hatch secured. Never leave a tank in a hot parked car for extended periods.

Safe transport tips

  1. Close the valve and install the cap if provided.
  2. Stand tank upright and strap it so it cannot roll.
  3. Prefer a flat trunk floor; avoid letting tanks roll on seats.
  4. Make transport direct — no extended errands with propane in a hot car.
  5. Remove the tank when you arrive; do not store cylinders in vehicles overnight.
