Why does my grill keep going out?
Quick answer
A grill that keeps going out may have regulator bypass, insufficient gas flow, wind blowing out flames, or dirty burners causing flame lift-off. Reset the regulator, cook with the lid down after preheat in windy conditions, and clean burner tubes. Faulty safety valves in cheap regulators also cause dropouts — replacement fixes it.
Wind and lid use
Flames blow out easily on open decks. Preheat lid-down once burners are stable, and position the grill behind a wind break if safe and code-compliant.
Mechanical causes
- Excess-flow device tripping
- Partially blocked orifices
- Failing regulator diaphragm
- Very low tank pressure in cold weather combined with high demand
