How do I season cast iron grates?

Quick answer

Season cast iron grates by cleaning off factory coating or rust, coating with thin high-smoke oil, and heating on the grill 15–20 minutes until the oil polymerizes — repeat 2–3 cycles for a dark nonstick patina. Re-oil lightly after each deep clean.

Seasoning process

  1. Remove grates; scrub with brush and dry fully.
  2. Apply very thin oil layer — wipe almost dry.
  3. Heat on grill medium-high 15–20 minutes with lid down.
  4. Cool slightly; repeat 2–3 times for new grates.
  5. After cooking, brush and light oil coat when cool.
